ABOUT THE ARTIST

Designs by Kaye Louise was first created as a unique handmade jewelry concern.  Now, the same skilled artist’s hands are building unique pottery from slabs of clay.  Kaye Louise has redirected her creativity to handcraft original  pieces glazed with homemade recipes for a perfectly imperfect finishing touch!

BIO

My interest and education in ceramics began in the boys’ shop class in high school in 1969.  In those days, the potter’s wheel was solely for the boys’ to use while we girls learned to cook and sew.  In my senior year, I was fortunate to have a ‘free period’ and found a contemporary minded shop teacher who allowed me to get my hands dirty.

In subsequent years, I studied at the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers with Vera Cotler.   With a good friend, I put a small studio together in my basement.  Henry Okamoto from the Clay Art Center in Portchester helped us acquire the appropriate equipment, clays, chemicals and continually offered priceless tips and glaze recipes.   My education for the next several years was through practice, trial and error.  By 1977, life’s pressing obligations thwarted my ability to remain active in clay.

In 1973 I began designing and repairing beaded jewelry through the family jewelry repair business and continued through 1995.

In 1988 my husband and I opened a music business that we continue to operate today.

In 2001, I was given the gift of a semester of ceramics  at  Westchester Art Workshop by my daughter Amber (thank you!).   I studied ceramics with Harriet Ross and glazes and firing with Lois Toolen trough 2005.  During this period, I attended many workshops and presentations, an NCECA conference, and joined Hudson River Potters. My husband Joe provided me with the equipment necessary and helped me build a new home studio (thank you!).  I am so fortunate to be able to rekindle my love affair with clay.
